Chapter 14 - The Emergency Custody Hearing

The hearing took place by secure video the following morning.
Marcus remained in Lily’s hospital room.
Miranda sat with her attorney in a separate conference room.
The judge reviewed the original custody order, hospital footage, false medical records, and Lily’s interview.
Miranda’s attorney argued that she had been coerced by Charles and Grant.
Marcus’s attorney did not deny the coercion.
He focused on the decision Miranda still made.
She closed the curtain.
She allowed Grant and Russell to remain with Lily.
She signed the transfer order.
She helped create the initial false account.
Miranda wept quietly.
“I was trying to prevent something worse.”
The judge asked, “Worse for whom?”
Miranda could not answer.
Lily had requested permission to speak.
The judge addressed her gently.
“You do not have to choose between your parents today.”
Lily looked at Marcus.
Then at her mother on the screen.
“I want to go with Dad.”
Miranda covered her mouth.
Lily continued.
“I love Mom. But she was there, and she didn’t stop them.”
The words left no room for excuses.
The judge granted Marcus temporary sole custody.
Miranda received supervised visitation only after Lily’s therapist approved.
Charles and Grant were prohibited from any contact.
Marcus thanked the court.
Then Lily asked one question.
“Can Mom still get better?”
The judge paused.
“Yes,” she said. “But that work belongs to her, not you.”
Miranda cried harder.
For the first time, someone had removed the burden from Lily.
She did not have to protect her mother.
Forgive her immediately.
Or carry the family’s healing.
Marcus promised Lily they would leave when the doctor cleared her.
She looked toward the open doorway.
“What if Grandpa’s men come back?”
“They won’t.”
“How do you know?”
Marcus pulled a chair closer to the bed.
“Because I’m staying right here.”
That night, he slept sitting upright with one hand resting beside hers.
At 3:04 a.m., Lily woke from a nightmare.
She did not scream.
She simply whispered, “Dad?”
Marcus opened his eyes immediately.
“I’m here.”

This time, she believed him.
👉 Marcus had secured Lily’s safety—but the trial would reveal whether Miranda chose truth over the fortune she stood to inherit.
