Chapter 1 - The Paper Ethan Was Forced to Trace
Vanessa gave the chain another hard yank.
Two-year-old Ethan slid across the polished hardwood floor, crying as the metal hook pulled against the sturdy belt around his waist.
He grabbed the small cabinet door beneath the stairs.
“Please!”
Vanessa tore his hands loose.
Then she shoved him inside.
“That’s where you live.”
The front door slammed open.
Daniel Carter stood in the entryway.
For one second, he couldn’t process what he was seeing.
His son was crying inside a storage cabinet.
A dog chain ran from Ethan’s belt into Vanessa’s hand.
Daniel dropped his suitcase.
“ETHAN!”
He crossed the room, ripped the chain away from Vanessa, unhooked his son, and pulled him behind his legs.
“Dad!”
Vanessa reached for Ethan again.
Daniel knocked her hand away.
“DON’T YOU EVER TOUCH MY SON.”
Ethan wrapped both arms around Daniel’s leg.
Then, still trembling, he reached inside his shirt.
A folded piece of paper came out.
“She makes me write this every day.”
Vanessa froze.
Daniel slowly unfolded it.
The camera of his mind seemed to narrow.
At first he saw childish lines.
Large printed words.
Faint tracing marks drawn over them again and again by a toddler who could barely hold a crayon correctly.
Then Daniel read the sentence Vanessa had apparently been forcing his son to trace.
His face drained of color.
Daddy hurts me.
Daddy scares me.
Daddy locks me away.
Beneath the words was something worse.
A photocopy of Daniel’s signature.
With shaky practice marks drawn over it.
Again.
And again.
Daniel slowly lifted his eyes.
Vanessa took one step backward.
“What the hell is this?”
“I can explain.”
“No.”
His voice became quiet.
“You’re going to explain nothing until I know exactly what you’ve been doing to my son.”
Ethan hid behind him.
Vanessa looked toward the cabinet.
Daniel noticed.
He opened it completely.
Behind cleaning supplies sat a thick folder.
On the tab:
CARTER FAMILY TRUST.
Daniel stared at his wife.
