Chapter 7 - The Videos Vanessa Was Building

Daniel rushed to Lauren’s house.

Ethan sat on the floor holding a toy truck.

Lauren had not questioned him aggressively.

She knew better.

She simply listened.

Ethan said Vanessa sometimes placed her phone on a shelf.

Then told him:

“Cry.”

“Say Daddy scared you.”

“Say Daddy yelled.”

If he didn’t cooperate, she squeezed his arm.

Sometimes she locked him beneath the stairs.

Sometimes she pulled the chain attached to his belt.

Daniel had to leave the room.

He stood in Lauren’s kitchen gripping the counter.

He wanted to break something.

Instead, he called Ethan’s pediatrician.

Then Rebecca.

Then a child specialist.

That was the difference now.

He wasn’t going to react.

He was going to protect.

A forensic review of Vanessa’s cloud storage uncovered dozens of videos.

Ethan crying.

Ethan saying:

“Daddy scary.”

Ethan hiding under the stairs.

But the raw videos contained material Vanessa hadn’t expected anyone to see.

Before one clip, her voice:

“Again. Say it right.”

Another:

“No crying, no snack.”

Another showed her pinching Ethan’s upper arm just before recording began.

Daniel turned away from the screen.

Rebecca stopped the playback.

“We have enough.”

“No.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I need to know everything.”

They continued.

Then came a video that seemed different.

Ethan sat under the stairs.

Vanessa was speaking to someone off-camera.

A male voice.

Marcus.

“We need bruising that looks accidental.”

Daniel went completely still.

The recording ended.

Rebecca immediately preserved it.

Now they had direct evidence linking Vanessa’s brother to the abuse scheme.

Investigators became involved.

Marcus denied everything.

Then his phone records placed him at Daniel’s house on several afternoons when Daniel was traveling.

Security footage from a neighbor showed his vehicle.

The conspiracy tightened.

But something still didn’t fit.

Why twelve million dollars in insurance?

Why eighteen million in trust assets?

Even if Vanessa became temporary guardian, she couldn’t simply withdraw Ethan’s inheritance.

Independent trustees controlled major distributions.

Rebecca agreed.

“Someone misunderstood how much control guardianship would actually provide.”

Then the answer appeared in an email from Marcus.

Once you’re guardian, challenge Sloan as trustee. Replace her. We refinance against Carter assets.

Daniel stared.

They weren't trying to steal cash immediately.

They wanted leverage.

Control.

The appearance of authority.

Enough to borrow against future trust interests and rescue Marcus’s failing investments.

Then Rebecca found one more draft document.

Petition for Emergency Protective Custody.

Scheduled filing date:

Monday.

Daniel had returned from his business trip on Friday.
