Chapter 5 - Rachel’s Locked Office

Daniel opened Rachel’s office.

The smell hit him first.

Cedar.

Paper.

The faint perfume Rachel used to wear.

For eighteen months, he had barely touched the room.

Vanessa claimed she had preserved it exactly as Rachel left it.

She lied.

The desk drawers had been searched.

Cabinet folders were missing.

One floorboard near the wall sat slightly raised.

Daniel crouched.

Underneath was a narrow metal box.

Vanessa appeared in the doorway.

“Daniel.”

He looked back.

Her voice had changed.

Not controlling anymore.

Afraid.

He opened the box.

Inside were old trust documents.

A flash drive.

And a handwritten letter.

Daniel recognized Rachel’s handwriting immediately.

My Daniel,

If you’re finding this because something feels wrong, trust that feeling—but verify everything.

His eyes filled.

Rachel had written the letter during her final months of cancer treatment.

She knew she might not live to raise Ethan.

She wrote about practical things.

Insurance.

Guardianship.

The trust.

Then:

I have become uncomfortable with Vanessa’s interest in Ethan’s inheritance.

Daniel slowly looked up.

Vanessa whispered:

“She hated me.”

He kept reading.

Rachel explained that Vanessa—then a family friend helping during treatment—had repeatedly asked what happened financially if Daniel died after Rachel.

How much Ethan inherited.

Who controlled the trust.

Whether a spouse automatically became guardian.

Rachel had been disturbed enough to call Rebecca.

Daniel swallowed.

Rebecca had known Vanessa before Daniel married her.

He returned to the letter.

Rachel’s final paragraph read:

If I’m wrong, I hope you laugh at me someday.

If I’m right, protect Ethan first.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Vanessa stepped into the room.

“She was jealous.”

“Of what?”

“Me.”

“You weren’t my wife.”

“She knew you trusted me.”

Daniel stared at her.

Rachel was dying.

And Vanessa had apparently interpreted proximity to a grieving family as opportunity.

Then Daniel opened the flash drive.

Rebecca stopped him through the phone.

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Preserve it first.”

She sent a digital-forensics specialist.

Hours later, they safely accessed the files.

One folder contained screenshots.

Messages between Rachel and Vanessa.

Rachel:

Stop asking about Ethan’s trust.

Vanessa:

I’m trying to help.

Rachel:

Then help without calculating what happens when his parents die.

Vanessa:

You’re being dramatic.

Rachel:

Maybe. But I’m documenting it anyway.

Daniel stared at the final message.

Vanessa had replied:

May you like

YOU WON’T BE HERE FOREVER.

👉 Rachel had warned Daniel from beyond the grave—but the messages suggested Vanessa’s obsession with the Carter money started before Rachel ever died.
