Chapter 2 - The Folder Beneath the Stairs

Daniel pulled out the folder.

Vanessa lunged.

“Give me that.”

He stepped away.

“No.”

“You don’t understand those papers.”

“Apparently you understand them very well.”

Inside were copies of family court forms.

Draft affidavits.

Medical authorization forms.

A temporary guardianship petition.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

His name appeared throughout the paperwork.

So did Ethan’s.

Then he found Vanessa’s.

Proposed temporary guardian:

Vanessa Carter.

Daniel looked up.

“What is this?”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Planning.”

“For what?”

“If something happened.”

“Something like what?”

She said nothing.

Daniel read further.

The proposed petition claimed he had become increasingly violent after the death of Ethan’s biological mother, Rachel.

Daniel’s hands began trembling.

Rachel had died from cancer eighteen months earlier.

Daniel had grieved.

He had struggled.

But he had never hurt Ethan.

The document alleged otherwise.

Aggressive outbursts.

Threatening behavior.

Child fearful around father.

Then Daniel saw the supporting evidence list.

Child statements.

Photographs of bruising.

Witness testimony.

Daniel looked toward Ethan’s fading bruise.

His chest tightened.

“How did he get that bruise?”

Vanessa immediately answered.

“He fell.”

Ethan shook his head.

Daniel crouched.

“Buddy?”

Ethan pointed toward Vanessa.

“She squeezes.”

Vanessa snapped:

“He’s two!”

Daniel stood.

“That doesn’t make him invisible.”

Then he found another page.

A clause from the Carter Family Trust.

Daniel recognized it.

His parents had established the trust decades earlier.

If Daniel became legally incapacitated or lost custody through a finding of serious misconduct, temporary management of certain assets would pass to Ethan’s court-appointed guardian until independent trustees assumed control.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

The trust held nearly eighteen million dollars.

Suddenly the paper in Ethan’s shirt made terrifying sense.

“You weren’t trying to make him hate me.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You were building evidence.”

Silence.

Daniel looked back at the fake statements.

“You wanted someone to believe I was abusing my own son.”

Vanessa whispered:

“You have no idea what I wanted.”

Then Daniel’s phone buzzed.

His attorney.

Three missed calls.

And one message:

May you like

DANIEL, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING VANESSA GIVES YOU. CALL ME IMMEDIATELY.

👉 Daniel had discovered the fake abuse story—but his attorney already knew something was wrong, and whatever triggered the warning had happened while Daniel was away.
