Chapter 6 - Why Vanessa Married Daniel
Daniel moved Ethan to his sister Lauren’s house that night.
Vanessa was told not to contact the child.
She became furious.
“You can’t take my son away from me!”
Daniel turned.
“He isn’t your son when you chain him under stairs.”
Vanessa flinched.
“I disciplined him.”
“No.”
Daniel’s voice remained calm.
“You terrorized him.”
That calm frightened her more than shouting.
Rebecca began reconstructing Vanessa’s financial history.
The first major discovery arrived two days later.
Vanessa was nearly broke when she married Daniel.
Not simply struggling.
Broke.
Hidden credit cards.
Two personal loans.
A failed boutique investment.
Almost $600,000 in liabilities.
Daniel had known about none of it.
“How?”
“She kept accounts separate,” Rebecca explained.
Daniel remembered Vanessa insisting it was “healthy independence.”
Then another record surfaced.
Three weeks after Rachel died, Vanessa had searched online:

Daniel stared at the search history.
Rebecca said:
“Still not proof of a completed crime.”
“I know.”
He appreciated that she kept reminding him.
Evidence first.

An email Vanessa sent to an unknown account seven months before marrying Daniel.
HE TRUSTS ME WITH ETHAN NOW.
The reply:
THEN DON’T RUSH IT.
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
There was someone else.
Rebecca traced the address to a prepaid service.
No name.
But Vanessa’s bank statements revealed monthly payments to a private consulting firm:
Hale Strategic Solutions.
Daniel frowned.
“Hale?”
Vanessa’s maiden name.
The company belonged to her older brother, Marcus Hale.
Daniel had met him twice.
Vanessa always said they weren’t close.
Rebecca found corporate records.
Marcus specialized in distressed-property acquisitions.
More importantly, he had substantial gambling debts and a history of civil fraud allegations.
Then one text recovered from Vanessa’s cloud backup changed everything.
Marcus:
YOU DON’T NEED DANIEL DEAD. YOU NEED HIM REMOVED.
Vanessa:
I KNOW.
Marcus:
BUILD THE RECORD.
Daniel felt the room go cold.
Build the record.
The tracing sheets.
The bruises.
The guardianship paperwork.
The staged narrative.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“This may be bigger than Vanessa acting alone.”
Daniel nodded.
Then his phone rang.
Lauren.
Her voice was shaking.
