Chapter 9 - The Offer Vanessa Had Prepared
Inside Peter Lawson’s files was a settlement agreement.
It had been prepared before any custody case existed.
Daniel read it slowly.
In exchange for Vanessa withdrawing abuse allegations and supporting reunification with Ethan, Daniel would agree to:
Transfer substantial marital assets.
Grant Vanessa a multi-million-dollar settlement.
Resign control over certain family trust disputes.
Approve refinancing tied to Marcus’s companies.
Daniel looked at Rebecca.
“They were going to take Ethan, then sell him back to me.”
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“Legally disguised as settlement leverage.”
Daniel felt nauseated.
Then he found a clause that made him stop.
Confidentiality.
Daniel could never publicly accuse Vanessa, Marcus, or their advisors of manufacturing evidence.
They weren’t merely planning a theft.
They were planning a clean ending.
Daniel signs.
Vanessa gets money.
Marcus gets financing.
Peter gets paid.
Ethan returns home.
Everyone moves on.
Except Ethan.
Daniel looked at his son’s tracing sheets.
A toddler forced to practice accusing his father so adults could manipulate millions.
Something inside Daniel changed.
He stopped thinking about revenge.
He wanted accountability.
Every lawful piece of it.
Vanessa was questioned.
She denied the chain.
Then investigators showed photographs Daniel had taken immediately after returning home.
She called it “a safety tether.”
Then they showed raw videos.
She called them “behavioral exercises.”
Then Marcus’s voice appeared.
She stopped talking.
Her attorney requested a break.
Meanwhile, Peter’s office was searched pursuant to warrants related to fraud allegations.
Investigators recovered draft settlement agreements.
Email chains.
Billing records.
Then one handwritten note:
Need D unstable on camera.
Daniel stared.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca looked through related files.
Then found the plan.
Vanessa intended to provoke Daniel during the custody confrontation.
Peter expected Daniel’s temper to become evidence.
Daniel remembered how close he came to losing control when he found Ethan.
He had struck Vanessa once while separating her from his child.
It had happened in anger.
The hallway security camera had captured part of it.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“They wanted that.”
Rebecca answered:
“Possibly.”
And suddenly Daniel realized Vanessa had not only abused Ethan.
She had designed the discovery scene too.
The chain.
The cabinet.
The cruelty.
Maybe she expected Daniel to come home eventually.
Maybe she wanted him enraged.
Maybe that violent reaction was supposed to become the final piece of evidence against him.
Then Ethan said something that confirmed it.
