Chapter 10 - The Camera Vanessa Forgot

The Carter house had cameras.
Vanessa knew that.
She had disabled two.
The living-room camera remained.
Why?
Because she wanted footage.
Investigators recovered the cloud archive.
The video showed Ethan on the floor.
Vanessa attaching the chain hook to his belt.
Dragging him.
Shoving him into the cabinet.
Then checking her phone.
Waiting.
She looked toward the front window twice.
Daniel realized why.
His travel schedule had changed.
He returned six hours early.
Vanessa had expected him later.
So perhaps the scene wasn't originally meant for him.
Then the footage revealed something else.
Before Daniel arrived, Vanessa positioned a second phone against a vase.
Its camera faced the cabinet.
She pressed RECORD.
Then told Ethan:
“Say Daddy put you here.”
Ethan cried:
“No.”
Vanessa pulled the chain.
“Say it.”
“No!”
Daniel covered his face.
The raw footage destroyed her narrative.
When Daniel entered, Vanessa panicked.
The staged recording turned into an actual discovery.
Her plan had failed because he came home early.
Then investigators recovered the video from her phone.
It stopped three seconds after Daniel burst inside.
She had attempted to delete it.
Cloud backup preserved it.
Rebecca looked at Daniel.
“This is very strong evidence.”
Then came something unexpected.
Daniel’s own reaction.
The video clearly showed him removing Ethan from danger.
Vanessa then reached for Ethan.
Daniel knocked her hand away and struck her.
Rebecca didn’t pretend that part didn't matter.
“You used force.”
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.”
“We’ll address it accurately.”
He did.
He never claimed Vanessa made him hit her.
He explained what happened.
Investigators evaluated the sequence.
The physical context mattered.
So did proportionality.
So did the ongoing threat to Ethan.
Daniel let the legal process handle it.
That decision frustrated Vanessa.
She wanted him defensive.
Explosive.
Ashamed enough to hide things.
Instead, Daniel cooperated completely.
Then another camera clip surfaced.
Three weeks earlier.
Vanessa stood beneath the stairs speaking to Marcus.
Audio was faint but recoverable.
Marcus:
“What if Daniel gets the trust audited?”
Vanessa:
“He won’t.”
Marcus:
“How do you know?”
Vanessa smiled.
May you like
“Because by then he’ll be too busy proving he isn’t a monster.”
👉 Vanessa had built the entire plan around Daniel panicking—but once he stopped reacting and started documenting, her conspiracy began collapsing from the inside.
