Chapter 3 - The Document Daniel Never Signed

Daniel called attorney Rebecca Sloan.
He put her on speaker.
“Rebecca, what happened?”
“Are you alone?”
“No.”
“Is Vanessa there?”
Daniel looked directly at his wife.
“Yes.”
Rebecca’s voice changed.
“Then listen carefully.”
A document had been submitted that morning requesting an emergency review of the Carter Family Trust.
Attached was a sworn declaration supposedly signed by Daniel.
Daniel’s stomach dropped.
“I didn’t submit anything.”
“I know.”
“How?”
“Because it says you appeared before me yesterday.”
Daniel had been three states away on a business trip.
Rebecca continued.
“I never saw you.”
Vanessa slowly backed toward the hallway.
Daniel noticed.
“What did the document authorize?”
Rebecca hesitated.
“It attempted to expand Vanessa’s temporary authority if you became unavailable.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Unavailable?”
“The wording is broad.”
Rebecca paused.
“Daniel, there’s more.”
The filing included an allegation that Ethan had displayed signs of fear around Daniel.
It referred to “written statements created by the child.”
Daniel looked down at the tracing sheet.
Vanessa’s entire face changed.
Rebecca asked:
“Did you find something?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“A practice sheet.”
Silence.
Then Rebecca said:
“Do not destroy it.”
Daniel’s skin went cold.
Rebecca hadn’t dismissed the possibility.
She believed it mattered.
Then Ethan tugged at Daniel’s pants.
“Daddy.”
“What, buddy?”
“More paper.”
He pointed toward the small cabinet.
Daniel searched again.
Behind the family trust folder was a plastic bag filled with papers.
Hundreds of them.
The same sentences.
Daddy hurts me.
Daddy scares me.
Daddy locks me away.
Different crayons.
Different shaky lines.
Dates handwritten in Vanessa’s adult handwriting.
A manufactured history.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“How long?”
Vanessa’s composure cracked.
“Daniel—”
“How long have you been making him do this?”
She didn’t answer.
Rebecca spoke through the phone.
“Daniel, I need you to look for one specific document.”
“What?”
“A life insurance policy.”
Daniel stopped.

Vanessa went white.
👉 Vanessa’s plan seemed focused on custody and the trust—until Rebecca asked about an insurance policy Daniel didn’t even know existed.
