Chapter 4 - Twelve Million Dollars

The insurance policy was buried beneath the tracing sheets.
Daniel opened it.
Insured:
Daniel Carter.
Benefit:
$12,000,000.
He stared at the number.
“I never bought this.”
Rebecca answered quietly.
“Your company did.”
Daniel remembered now.
Years earlier, Carter Manufacturing had taken out key-person insurance on him.
Standard business planning.
But this policy had been amended.
The original beneficiary was the company.
A recent rider redirected part of the payout into a family protection trust under specific circumstances.
Daniel read the trustee designation.
Vanessa Carter.
His stomach tightened.
“I didn’t approve this.”
Rebecca said:
“That’s why I called.”
Vanessa suddenly snapped.
“It’s legal!”
Daniel looked at her.
“Then why hide it?”
“I didn’t hide anything.”
“You chained my son to a cabinet containing it.”
She stopped.
Daniel flipped through the pages.
His signature appeared.
It looked real.
Almost.
But he knew something Vanessa apparently did not.
Daniel never signed his full middle name on legal documents.
His father had taught him that years ago because two generations of Carter men shared similar names.
The signature here included the middle name.
Wrong.
Rebecca asked:
“Does it look forged?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You’re not a handwriting expert.”
“No.”
Daniel held up Ethan’s practice sheet.
“But you’ve apparently been practicing signatures in this house.”
Vanessa’s eyes flicked toward it.
That tiny reaction told him enough.
Then Daniel remembered something from six months earlier.
Vanessa had repeatedly asked him to sign blank school forms because she “forgot the packet.”
At least twice, he had signed pages without reading every line.
He felt sick.
Rebecca heard the silence.
“What are you thinking?”
“She may have samples.”
Rebecca replied:
“Then assume everything needs independent verification.”
Daniel nodded.
He wasn’t going to turn fear into conclusions.
He was going to prove things.
Then Ethan whispered:
“Mommy room.”
Daniel froze.
Rachel’s old office upstairs had remained locked since her death.
Vanessa claimed she couldn’t bear to disturb it.
Daniel looked at his wife.
“What about Mommy’s room?”
Ethan pointed upstairs.
“Vanessa takes papers.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Daniel started toward the stairs.
Vanessa stepped directly in front of him.
“You’re not going in there.”
The sentence was so automatic that even she seemed shocked by it.
Daniel stared at her.
“This is my house.”
May you like
Then he walked around her.
👉 Vanessa had hidden forged papers beneath the stairs—but Ethan had just revealed she’d also been secretly searching the office of Daniel’s dead wife.
