Chapter 8 - The Lawyer Who Helped Her
The emergency petition had been prepared by attorney Peter Lawson.
Daniel knew him.
Peter had handled Carter Manufacturing contracts for nine years.
He attended Ethan’s first birthday party.
He sent flowers when Rachel died.
Daniel felt sick.
Rebecca immediately checked the filing metadata.
Peter’s office created the draft.
He claimed Vanessa came to him frightened.
“She said Ethan was being abused.”
Rebecca asked:
“Did you verify anything?”
Peter hesitated.
“She had videos.”
Edited videos.
Coached videos.
But Peter had another problem.
He had also prepared the forged insurance amendment.
His story changed.
Vanessa claimed Daniel authorized it verbally.
Peter accepted copied signatures.
Why?
Investigators found $90,000 in payments from Hale Strategic Solutions to an entity owned by Peter’s wife.
Consulting.
No real deliverables.
Peter stopped cooperating without his lawyer.
Then Daniel remembered something.
Six months earlier, Peter asked him casually:
“If you ever needed someone to step in with Ethan temporarily, would Vanessa be your choice?”
Daniel had laughed.
“Of course.”
One innocent sentence.
Peter later cited it in a legal memo as evidence of Daniel’s “expressed guardianship preference.”
Daniel stared at the memo.
“They turned everything I said into something useful.”
Rebecca nodded.
“That’s how manipulation works when it wants to look legitimate.”
The good news:
The trust itself was stronger than Vanessa realized.
Rachel had insisted on multiple independent safeguards.
No spouse or guardian could unilaterally control Ethan’s principal.
Rebecca remained trustee alongside a corporate fiduciary.
Vanessa’s plan could have caused chaos.
It could have damaged Daniel.
It could have traumatized Ethan.
But she was never going to simply take eighteen million dollars.
Daniel almost laughed.
“All of this for something she didn’t fully understand.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Don’t underestimate the damage she could still have caused.”
She was right.
A false abuse case could have separated father and son for months.
Years.
Then investigators found another message.
Vanessa to Marcus:
IF THEY TAKE ETHAN FIRST, DANIEL WILL SIGN ANYTHING TO GET HIM BACK.
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
That was the true leverage.
Not guardianship.
Not immediate trust control.
Ethan.
They planned to use his son as bargaining power.
Then Marcus replied:

Vanessa:
May you like
HE WILL.
👉 Vanessa never needed to permanently control Ethan’s trust—she planned to make Daniel surrender everything voluntarily just to get his child back.
