Chapter 1 - The Blanket From That Night

Michael Hale’s coffee cup slipped from his hand the moment he saw the faded blue blanket.

It struck the farmhouse step, cracked along the rim, and spilled dark coffee across the gravel.

Twenty-five-year-old Noah stood beside a dark blue SUV, holding the carefully folded blanket against his chest.

Michael gripped the porch post as if it were the only thing keeping him upright.

“Where did you get that?” he whispered.

Before Noah could answer, Sarah stepped from behind the post with a thin, mocking smile.

“Look who finally remembered us.”

The two elderly neighbors in the rocking chairs leaned forward, hungry for the spectacle.

Sarah had spent years telling everyone that Noah had abandoned the poor farmer who raised him.

She said success had made him ashamed.

She said Michael had wasted his life on an ungrateful child who wasn’t even his.

Now Noah was back.

And Sarah immediately reached for the blanket.

“That belongs to this family.”

Noah turned his body away before her fingers could touch it.

Her hand closed on empty air.

“No,” he said, stepping toward Michael. “It belongs to the man who saved me.”

He pulled back one corner.

A faded hospital identification strip had been sewn into the fabric.

Michael’s breath stopped.

Sarah’s smirk disappeared.
