Chapter 12 - The Neighbor Who Saw Everything

Neighbor One, Dorothy Bell, had lived across the road for fifty years.

When Noah visited her, she refused to meet his eyes.

Finally, she walked to an old bedroom and opened a dresser drawer.

The blue blanket lay inside.

Sarah had thrown it into a burn barrel behind the farmhouse two weeks earlier.

Dorothy saw her.

She retrieved it before the fire was lit.

“Why didn’t you tell Michael?”

Dorothy’s voice shook.

“Because I’ve been a coward nearly as long as Sarah.”

She admitted she had seen a car near the barn on the stormy night Noah was found.

Sarah had been driving.

Dorothy recognized her.

But when Michael became attached to the baby, Dorothy stayed silent.

She feared the authorities might remove Noah and punish Michael for keeping him.

Years passed.

Silence became harder to break.

“I thought I was protecting your family.”

“You protected Sarah.”

Dorothy nodded through tears.

“Yes.”

She gave Noah the blanket and a written statement.

The second neighbor, Louise, had also agreed to testify that Sarah later confessed during an argument.

The two women had not been sitting on the porch merely to gossip.

Noah had asked them to be present.
