Chapter 5 - The Day Noah Left

Noah was eighteen when he earned a scholarship to study agricultural engineering.

The university was three hours away.

Michael was proud.

Sarah was cruel.

She stood beside Noah’s packed truck and said, “Once he sees a better life, he won’t come back.”

Noah ignored her.

Michael gave him the old farmhouse key tied to a frayed blue thread.

“You never have to knock.”

Noah hugged him.

“I’m coming back, Dad.”

He meant it.

But life moved quickly.

Classes became internships.

Internships became long projects.

Noah called every Sunday, though Michael rarely told Sarah about the calls.

He sent money, but Michael returned most of it.

“This farm raised you,” Michael would say. “You don’t owe it rent.”

Noah visited whenever he could.

Yet Sarah told the neighbors a different story.

She said Noah had vanished.

She said he was embarrassed by Michael’s poverty.

She said he only called when he needed something.

Michael refused to defend himself publicly.

The rumors spread.

Noah did not know the entire town had begun believing he was ungrateful.
