Chapter 9 - The Sister Who Disappeared
The woman in the photograph was Sarah’s younger sister, Rebecca.
Michael had rarely spoken about her.
Noah had been told she moved west after a family argument and died years later.
That was only partly true.
Rebecca had become pregnant at nineteen.
The father came from a wealthy family that refused to acknowledge the child.
Sarah arranged for Rebecca to give birth privately.
She promised to help.
But after the delivery, the father’s family sent a lawyer.
They offered money in exchange for making the baby disappear from their lives.
Rebecca refused.
Sarah did not.
She had debts.
She feared scandal.
She believed a newborn would destroy both their futures.
While Rebecca was sedated, Sarah signed discharge paperwork claiming the baby had been transferred to an adoption agency.
Instead, she took him from the clinic.
She planned to leave him at a church.
The storm forced her to stop near Michael’s farm.
She placed the box beneath the barn overhang.
She knew Michael was kind.
She knew he would hear the crying.
But she never checked whether he did.
Noah’s hands went cold.
“You left me outside during a storm?”
Sarah’s eyes filled.
“I thought he’d find you immediately.”
