Chapter 2 - The Baby at the Barn Door

Twenty-five years earlier, Michael had been forty-eight and alone.

His wife, Ellen, had died after a long illness.

They had never been able to have children.

Michael believed the farmhouse would remain quiet for the rest of his life.

Then, during a freezing November storm, he heard crying outside the barn.

At first, he thought it was an injured animal.

He followed the sound through heavy rain and found a cardboard produce box beneath the overhang.

Inside was a newborn boy.

The baby was wrapped in a faded blue hospital blanket.

His lips were pale.

His tiny hands were stiff with cold.

Michael ran nearly half a mile through the mud because his truck would not start.

He carried the child beneath his coat until a neighbor drove them to the county hospital.

Doctors said another thirty minutes outside might have killed him.

No note had been left.

No name.

No explanation.

Only the blanket and a hospital strip with most of the writing deliberately scratched away.

Michael stayed beside the baby all night.

When a nurse asked who he was, Michael looked at the child gripping his finger.

“I’m the man who found him.”

But even then, Sarah had been standing in the hallway.
