Chapter 11 - The Money That Never Reached Him

Rebecca had left a small life-insurance policy.

She named her missing son as beneficiary.

Because Noah’s legal identity had changed after adoption, the insurance company could not locate him.

They contacted Sarah as Rebecca’s surviving relative.

Sarah signed a sworn statement claiming the child had died shortly after birth.

She collected the money.

It was not a fortune.

But it was enough to pay her debts and purchase a rental property.

Noah stared at the document copies.

“You declared me dead.”

Sarah began crying.

“I was desperate.”

“You knew exactly where I lived.”

“I told myself Michael had given you everything you needed.”

“He sold his land to pay for my surgery.”

Sarah flinched.

“He worked until his hands split open.”

“I know.”

“No. You watched.”

Noah realized the folder could expose fraud.

But punishment was not the reason he had returned.

Michael had already sacrificed too many years to another person’s lies.

Noah wanted the truth documented before Sarah could rewrite it again.

He contacted an attorney.

He secured certified records.

Then he searched for the blue blanket Michael had carefully stored in a cedar chest.

It was gone.
