Chapter 6 - The Call Sarah Hid
Michael had suffered severe dehydration and a heart rhythm problem.
He survived.
But the doctor warned that he could no longer manage the farm alone.
Sarah listed herself as his emergency contact.
She never called Noah.
Instead, she told Michael that Noah had not responded.
“He has his own life,” she said. “Stop humiliating yourself.”
Michael believed her.
He had never wanted to become a burden.
When Noah finally reached the hospital directly, Michael had already been discharged.
Sarah intercepted him at the farmhouse gate.
“He doesn’t want you here.”
Noah stared at her.
“My father would tell me himself.”
“He’s ashamed you waited so long.”
Noah pushed past her and found Michael asleep in a chair, thinner than he had ever seen him.
On the table lay a pile of unpaid bills.
Beside them was a letter from the bank warning that the property could be sold.
Michael woke and looked at Noah with wet, confused eyes.
“I thought you knew.”
Noah slowly turned toward Sarah.
She was no longer in the room.
That night, Noah searched Michael’s old metal filing cabinet.
One folder was missing.
