Chapter 7 - The Retired Nurse
Noah found the name of the nurse who had treated him as a newborn in one of Michael’s old journals.
Evelyn Price.
She was eighty-two and living in an assisted-care community outside Louisville.
When Noah introduced himself, she began crying before he finished his sentence.
“I always wondered whether you survived.”
Noah sat across from her.
“You knew who I was?”
“I knew where you were born.”
She explained that the faded hospital strip had come from a private maternity clinic that closed after a records scandal.
The clinic had served wealthy families who wanted complete privacy.
Several patient files disappeared during the closure.
Evelyn had copied the strip number before police took the blanket.
Years later, the blanket had been returned to Michael with Noah’s personal belongings.
But Michael never knew the number’s meaning.
Evelyn handed Noah a sealed envelope.
Inside was a photocopy of an intake ledger.
A partial surname appeared beside the matching number.
Noah stared at it.
The name was familiar.
Not because it belonged to a famous family.
