Chapter 10 - THE ATTORNEY AT THE DOOR

The man at the front door was Samuel Grant, Ernest’s attorney.

He carried a slim leather case.

Beside him stood a licensed process server and a home-security technician.

Louis stared.

“What is this?”

Samuel entered only after Ernest nodded.

“Mr. Harris asked us to attend at eight.”

Carla looked at the wall clock.

It was exactly eight.

Samuel placed several envelopes on the table.

“One for Louis Harris. One for Carla Benton.”

Louis did not touch his.

“What is it?”

“Formal notice terminating permission to reside in this property.”

Carla stepped forward.

“You can’t evict family during a birthday party.”

Samuel looked at her.

“You are not Mr. Harris’s family by marriage, ownership, or tenancy agreement.”

“I get mail here.”

“That does not create ownership.”

Louis laughed nervously.

“This is ridiculous.”

Ernest looked at him.

“So was the bowl.”
