Chapter 9 - THE FIRST GUEST TO UNDERSTAND

At the party, Aunt Evelyn stopped laughing first.

She was Ernest’s older sister.

She had noticed the dog bowl before Louis placed it on the table.

She assumed it was part of a harmless joke.

Then she saw Ernest’s face.

Evelyn set down her cup.

“Louis, that’s enough.”

Louis ignored her.

Carla kept filming.

When the cards froze, Evelyn looked at Ernest differently.

She remembered her brother spending nights at their kitchen table studying accounting textbooks.

She remembered him supporting their parents.

Paying her college application fee.

Helping Louis through school.

Ernest had never been helpless.

He had only been quiet.

Evelyn moved beside him.

“Do you need me to call someone?”

May you like

“I already did.”

The doorbell rang.
