Chapter 21 - THE NIGHT THEY LOST THE HOUSE

Louis and Carla were permitted to collect essential belongings.
They had seventy-two hours to arrange removal of the rest.
Louis stood in the hallway surrounded by suitcases.
“This is still my home.”
Ernest looked at him.
“You made it a place where I was afraid to sit at my own table.”
Louis’s eyes filled.
“I’m your son.”
“Yes.”
“Doesn’t that mean anything?”
“It meant enough for me to carry you for thirty-six years.”
