Chapter 7 - THE BANKING DEVICE

The small security device on Ernest’s key ring had been issued after he reported suspicious activity.
It could freeze every linked card and transfer with one press.
The bank officer had asked whether Ernest wanted the accounts closed immediately.
“No,” Ernest said.
“Why not?”
“I need to know how far they’ll go.”
The officer hesitated.
“Mr. Harris, these are family members.”
“That is why I need certainty.”
Ernest created a new protected account.
He moved his pension.
His investment income.
The deed reserve.
The emergency fund.
Louis and Carla continued spending from accounts Ernest had deliberately left active.
Every payment became evidence.
Every transfer revealed intention.
