Chapter 8 - THE HOUSE THEY THOUGHT THEY OWNED
Louis told everyone the house was practically his.
He claimed Ernest had signed it over after Margaret died.
Carla repeated the story so often that even some relatives believed it.
In reality, the deed remained solely in Ernest’s name.
The mortgage had been paid off twelve years earlier.
Louis had never paid property tax.
Never paid insurance.
Never paid for a roof repair.
Yet he spoke of renovation plans.
He wanted to remove Margaret’s photographs.
Turn Ernest’s bedroom into a guest suite.
Convert the upstairs study into Carla’s office.
The most revealing conversation occurred two weeks before the birthday.
Ernest’s hallway camera captured Louis saying:
“Once we get him into assisted living, the house is ours.”
Carla answered:
“Not unless he signs.”
“He will.”
“What if he doesn’t?”
Louis looked toward the staircase.
“Then we prove he can’t manage himself.”
