Chapter 29 - THE FIRST REAL APOLOGY

They met in a public library.
Louis looked thinner.
Older.
He placed his phone face down on the table.
“I served you dog food because I wanted everyone to believe you were beneath me.”
Ernest said nothing.
“I knew you paid for everything.”
Silence.
“I knew the house was yours.”
Ernest finally spoke.
“Why did you say otherwise?”
“Because if people believed I owned it, I could believe it too.”
Louis cried quietly.

Ernest did not embrace him.
But he stayed until the conversation ended.
