Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO STOPPED BEGGING

Ernest gripped the dog bowl with both hands.
Carla kept filming, expecting him to throw it or cry.
He did neither.
He rose slowly from his chair.
The room watched him carry the bowl toward the hallway.
He placed it carefully on the floor beside the arch.
Then he reached into his pocket and removed his keys.
A small black banking security device hung from the ring.
Louis laughed again.
“What are you going to do? Lock your bedroom?”
Ernest pressed the device once.
A small green light flashed.
He turned toward his son.
“Then pay for it yourself.”
Louis’s smile faltered.
His phone vibrated.
A second later, Carla’s phone buzzed so sharply that the recording stopped.
She frowned and tapped the screen.
Louis unlocked his digital wallet.
The first card showed disabled.
Then the second.
Then the third.
He tried the household account.
Frozen.
He opened the payment app connected to the mortgage, utilities, groceries, car lease, and business expenses.
Every transfer had stopped.
Carla’s face changed.
“What did you do?”
Ernest stood beside the staircase.
“I stopped paying.”
Louis tapped faster.
“You can’t shut down my accounts.”
“They were never your accounts.”
The room became completely silent.
A final alert appeared on Louis’s phone.
Beside it was a security symbol connected to a charge linked to Carla.
No name appeared.
No amount was visible.
Louis looked at her.
She pulled her own phone against her chest.
He turned toward Ernest.
“What did you find?”
May you like
Ernest looked directly at Carla.
“Enough.”
