Chapter 2 - The Woman Behind the Door

Daniel broke the padlock with a heavy iron tool from the storage shelf.

The steel door swung inward.

Rachel Carter collapsed toward him.

Daniel caught her before she hit the floor.

His sister looked exhausted.

Her hair was tangled.

Her lips were dry.

There were bruises around one wrist.

A half-empty bottle of water sat in the corner beside a blanket.

Daniel’s shock became rage.

“Rachel?”

Her eyes opened.

“Don’t let Vanessa leave.”

Those were the first words she managed.

Daniel carried Rachel through the hidden passage.

Lily burst into tears when she saw her aunt.

Vanessa backed toward the storage-room door.

Daniel’s security guard arrived before she reached it.

Daniel ordered the mansion gates closed and called emergency services.

Vanessa immediately began insisting Rachel was unstable.

That she had entered the hidden room herself.

That Vanessa had only locked the door because Rachel threatened Lily.

Rachel could barely sit upright, but she shook her head.

Lily stared at Vanessa.

Then she whispered that she had heard banging the night before.

She had followed the sound that morning.

Vanessa caught her looking inside the wardrobe.

That was why Vanessa had been dragging her away when Daniel entered.

Paramedics examined Rachel.

She had been trapped for roughly three days.

Dehydrated.

Weak.

Terrified.

But alive.

Police arrived.

Vanessa changed her story twice within twenty minutes.

First Rachel had locked herself inside.

Then Rachel had asked Vanessa to lock her inside because she was having a breakdown.

Then Vanessa claimed she knew nothing about the padlock.

The lock had Vanessa’s fingerprints on it.

Daniel’s security chief checked the mansion cameras.

The storage hallway camera had stopped recording three days earlier.

Exactly when Rachel disappeared.

Daniel remembered the text message he received from Rachel that night.

It said she had suddenly taken a consulting job in Chicago and needed time alone.

He had thought it strange.

But the messages came from Rachel’s number.

Rachel looked at him from the ambulance stretcher.

She said she had never sent them.

Her phone had disappeared the moment Vanessa locked her inside.

Police searched Vanessa’s handbag.

Rachel’s phone wasn’t there.

But they found something else.

A key.

It matched the hidden steel door.

And taped beneath Vanessa’s phone case was a tiny handwritten number.

Daniel recognized it.
