Chapter 4 - The Forged Signature

Daniel returned to the mansion with police and his attorney.
Vanessa had already hired counsel.
She refused further questioning.
Daniel did not argue with her.
He went directly to his study.
The filing cabinet Rachel described had been cleaned out.
Several folders were gone.
His attorney opened the electronic trust portal.
Someone had submitted documents requesting administrative changes.
The request was still pending.
Daniel stared at the screen.
The forms claimed he wanted to step aside temporarily because of increasing work demands.
They carried his electronic signature.
They included a notarized acknowledgement.
Daniel had never signed them.
The proposed successor was Vanessa Carter.
His wife of eighteen months.
Lily’s stepmother.
Daniel suddenly understood why Vanessa had spent the past year becoming involved in Lily’s schedule, schooling, doctors, and household finances.
He had interpreted it as commitment.
She had been building proximity.
The trust administrator had not approved the change because an additional confirmation call with Daniel was required.
That call was scheduled for Friday.
Vanessa had only two days left.
Rachel had found the papers before Vanessa could finish the transfer.
That explained why she was locked away.
It did not explain the $186,000 already missing.
The family accountant, Harold Pike, came to the mansion that evening.
He appeared nervous.
Daniel asked about VHC Restoration.
Harold claimed Daniel had approved the payments during a meeting six weeks earlier.
Daniel asked for the authorization.
Harold produced three scanned forms.
The signatures looked convincing.
Rachel examined them from her hospital bed through a secure video call.
All three were forged.
Daniel asked where the original documents were.
Harold said he did not know.
Then Daniel’s attorney checked the metadata.
The PDF files had not been created on Harold’s office system.
They originated from a computer inside the Carter mansion.
More precisely—
Vanessa’s personal laptop.
Police obtained a warrant before the night was over.
The laptop contained copies of the forged approvals.
But the VHC payments led to a bank account with another authorized user.
Not Vanessa.
Harold Pike.
Daniel stared at the name.
The accountant who had managed his family’s money for thirteen years was connected directly to the stolen funds.

And when police went to Harold’s home to question him again, he was gone.
👉 Vanessa had trapped Rachel inside the wall—but she hadn’t built the financial scheme alone.
