Chapter 6 - The Missing Codicil
Stephen Cole had been Daniel’s father’s estate attorney.
Years earlier, Daniel’s father amended his will.
The amendment—called a codicil—contained a special provision concerning the mansion.
Daniel knew the mansion would eventually become his.
What he did not know was that his father placed an additional restriction on it.
The property was meant to pass directly into Lily’s trust if Daniel died before Lily turned twenty-five.
Daniel could live there.
He could maintain it.
He could even sell it under certain conditions.
But a spouse could never inherit it outright.
Vanessa apparently learned about the codicil while searching old estate records.
That changed the financial stakes dramatically.
The mansion was worth more than $18 million.
If Daniel died, Vanessa would not receive it.
Lily would.
Stephen told investigators Vanessa had visited him pretending Daniel wanted a copy of the old estate documents.
Stephen refused because she had no written authorization.
On her second visit, she became angry.
She demanded to know where the original codicil was stored.
Stephen still refused.
Weeks later, his former office reported that archived boxes had been disturbed.
Nothing obvious appeared missing.
Now police searched Daniel’s storage room again.
The huge wardrobe suddenly mattered.
The hidden passage and steel chamber were part of the original mansion.
Daniel’s grandfather had used the chamber as a secure document vault.
When the family renovated the property, the interior entrance had been covered.
Someone later cut the opening through the back of the wardrobe.
Investigators examined the cut wood.
It was fresh.
Less than a year old.
Vanessa had known the chamber existed before Rachel was imprisoned.
Daniel asked how.
The answer came from old renovation plans found on Vanessa’s laptop.
She had downloaded them nine months earlier.
She had been searching the mansion for something.
Police returned to the steel room.
The chamber seemed empty except for the blanket and water Rachel used.
Then an investigator noticed one metal wall panel sat slightly crooked.
Behind it was a narrow cavity.
Inside were old envelopes.
Estate records.
Property deeds.
And a sealed legal folder bearing Daniel’s father’s name.
The original codicil was there.
So was something else.
A handwritten letter addressed directly to Daniel.
It had never been delivered.
The date was two weeks before his father died.
Daniel opened it with his attorney present.
The first paragraph contained a warning.
His father had discovered someone inside the family was trying to access the estate prematurely.
The letter named that person.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
