Chapter 15 - The Last Account

The overseas account initially looked like another accomplice.
Daniel prepared himself for one more betrayal.
The truth was less dramatic.
The name belonged to a corporate nominee used by Harold to hide beneficial ownership.
Financial investigators followed the paperwork through two jurisdictions.
Eventually the account led back to Harold.
There was no hidden mastermind.
No secret relative.
No final villain waiting behind Vanessa.
Daniel was almost relieved.
Real life did not need another twist.
It needed an ending.
Through court orders, asset seizures, insurance recovery, and restitution, most of the stolen funds returned to Lily’s trust.
Some legal fees and losses could never be recovered completely.
Daniel stopped caring about making the numbers perfect.
Lily’s future was secure.
Rachel recovered physically.
Emotionally, the hidden chamber stayed with her longer.
She hated closed doors.
Could not sleep in dark rooms.
Sometimes she woke hearing metal banging that was no longer there.
Daniel paid for treatment but never tried to rush her recovery.
Maria’s name was formally cleared.
Daniel personally corrected her employment record and compensated her through a civil settlement after Vanessa’s scheme was established.
Maria did not return to the mansion.
She had built a new life.
Daniel respected that.
Months later, he invited her to lunch with Rachel.
Not as an employee.
As someone whose courage should have been recognized sooner.
The storage room remained locked during the investigation.
When authorities finally released it, Daniel considered sealing the hidden passage forever.
Rachel surprised him.
She said hiding it again felt wrong.
The room had survived because people did not know it existed.
So Daniel made a different choice.
The wardrobe was moved.
The passage was opened.
The steel door was removed permanently.
The hidden chamber became ordinary storage space with lights, cameras, and no lock.
Nothing could happen there unseen again.
Lily watched from the hallway while workers carried the old steel door outside.
She did not seem frightened.
She looked curious.
Then she asked whether she could choose what the room became.
Daniel said yes.
Her answer made Rachel laugh for the first time in weeks.
Lily wanted shelves for art supplies.
