Chapter 3 - Rachel’s Warning
At the hospital, Rachel finally told Daniel what happened.
Three weeks earlier, she had noticed something odd in Lily’s trust statements.
Daniel’s late parents had created the trust when Lily was born.
Most of the money could not be touched until Lily became an adult.
Daniel served as trustee.
Rachel was the backup trustee.
Vanessa had no legal control.
At least she wasn’t supposed to.
Rachel noticed three recent payments labeled “property preservation expenses.”
Together, they totaled $186,000.
Daniel had never approved them.
The money had been transferred to a company called VHC Restoration.
Rachel searched the company.
It had been formed only five months earlier.
Its registered mailing address belonged to a private mailbox.
The authorized signer was someone named Victor Hayes.
Rachel kept digging.
Then she discovered Victor Hayes did not appear to exist.
Two weeks ago, she quietly asked the family accountant for supporting invoices.
The accountant promised to send them.
The following day, Vanessa appeared in Rachel’s apartment unexpectedly.
She acted casual.
She asked why Rachel was suddenly interested in Lily’s trust.
Rachel lied.
She said it was routine.
Vanessa smiled.
Rachel knew immediately she did not believe her.
Three days later, Rachel came to the mansion while Daniel was at work.
She intended to access an old filing cabinet in his study.
Instead, she found Vanessa inside.
Vanessa was holding several original trust documents.
Rachel confronted her.
Vanessa denied stealing anything.
Then Rachel saw a second set of papers.
Daniel’s signature appeared on them.
Rachel knew the signature was wrong.
Daniel always finished the final stroke of his last name sharply upward.
This one curved down.
A forgery.
Rachel pulled out her phone.
Vanessa grabbed it.
The confrontation moved into the storage room.
Rachel tried to escape.
Vanessa shoved her through the opening behind the wardrobe and locked the steel door.
Rachel screamed.
No one heard.
The old chamber had once been a document vault when Daniel’s grandfather owned the estate.
Its walls were thick.
Vanessa returned twice with water.
Each time she demanded to know where Rachel had stored copies of the trust records.
Rachel refused.
So Vanessa kept her there.
Daniel listened in silence.
Then Rachel revealed the part that frightened him most.
She had not been investigating ordinary theft.
The forged documents would eventually remove Daniel as trustee.
