Chapter 10 - The Decanter
The decanter was turned over voluntarily.
Testing could not reconstruct exactly what happened months earlier.
It had been washed.
Handled.
Stored improperly.
But residue inside the stopper contained traces of a prescription sedative Daniel had never been prescribed.
The discovery did not prove Vanessa put it in Daniel’s drink.
It did prove the substance had been inside the decanter.
Investigators searched prescription databases.
Vanessa had no prescription either.
Harold did.
He had received the medication following surgery.
His refill history showed an unusual replacement request shortly before Daniel’s hospitalization.
Harold initially claimed he lost several tablets.
Then prosecutors showed him the messages.
His story changed.
According to Harold, Vanessa asked him for medication because she could not sleep.
He gave it to her.
He denied knowing what she intended.
Vanessa denied ever receiving it.
Neither account matched the digital evidence completely.
Then investigators found a photograph in Vanessa’s deleted cloud backup.
The image showed several tablets beside the crystal decanter.
Its timestamp was the afternoon before Daniel became sick.
She had taken the picture herself.
Why?
No one knew.
Perhaps to ask Harold whether the pills were correct.
Perhaps as a record.
Perhaps by mistake.
But the image linked Vanessa directly to the sedative and the decanter.
The case expanded.
Daniel felt no satisfaction.
He felt nauseated.
He looked back at their marriage and questioned everything.
Vanessa had been charming.
Attentive.
Warm with Lily whenever he was present.
She remembered anniversaries.
Planned vacations.
Held Daniel’s hand in hospital.
And perhaps hours earlier she had put something in the drink that sent him there.
The betrayal was no longer financial.
It was intimate.
Daniel moved Lily temporarily to his sister’s home after Rachel recovered.
He could not bear the idea of his daughter sleeping in a mansion whose walls still seemed to contain secrets.
Lily asked whether Vanessa would come back.
Daniel told her no.
Then Lily said something that made him freeze.
Vanessa had once given her “special sleepy juice” when Daniel traveled.
Daniel immediately contacted Lily’s pediatrician.
There was no evidence Lily had been harmed.
No unexplained medical event.
But the statement had to be investigated.
Daniel’s anger became fear again.
Then Lily remembered where Vanessa kept the bottle.
Not in the kitchen.
Not in the bathroom.
