Chapter 11 - Under the Floorboard

Police returned to the storage room.

Lily did not.

Daniel refused to bring her back into the scene.

She described the location from Rachel’s house.

Three boards from the wardrobe.

Beside the old wooden trunk.

Investigators found a loose section.

Underneath was a narrow cavity.

Inside were two small bottles.

A flash drive.

A bundle of cash.

And several pieces of jewelry.

Maria Benson identified the jewelry immediately.

It was the same collection Vanessa once claimed Maria had stolen.

Vanessa had hidden the supposed stolen property herself.

That destroyed the story used to force Maria out.

The bottles were sent for testing.

One contained ordinary sleep-aid liquid.

The other contained a stronger prescription sedative.

No evidence established that Lily had received the stronger medication.

Her medical evaluation showed no lasting harm.

But the hidden drugs added another layer to the case.

The flash drive was even more important.

Harold had used it to transfer financial spreadsheets.

It contained an offline ledger.

Payments.

False invoices.

Trust withdrawals.

Planned transfers.

Vanessa’s expenses.

Harold’s share.

The document stretched back almost four years.

Before Daniel met Vanessa.

Harold had been stealing first.

Vanessa joined later.

Together they accelerated.

The ledger also contained projected values for Daniel’s death benefits, the mansion, and Lily’s trust.

There was no longer any plausible argument that Vanessa’s interest in the insurance policy was incidental.

One spreadsheet modeled several scenarios.

Daniel alive and trustee.

Daniel incapacitated.

Daniel deceased.

Rachel as successor.

Vanessa as successor.

Beside Rachel’s name was a handwritten digital note:

“Must remove.”

Rachel stared at it.

The words did not prove someone planned to kill her.

But they proved Vanessa and Harold saw her as an obstacle.

Locking Rachel inside the chamber suddenly looked connected to the financial planning rather than separate from it.

Harold’s attorney began negotiating.

The evidence against him was overwhelming.

He faced years of fraud allegations plus possible involvement in unlawful confinement and forged documents.

He offered cooperation.

Prosecutors demanded everything.

Accounts.

Passwords.

Documents.

The truth about Vanessa.

Harold finally agreed.

His first major disclosure stunned Daniel.

Vanessa had never planned merely to become successor trustee temporarily.

Once she gained control, she intended to transfer enough money out of reach that recovery would become difficult.

Then she intended to leave Daniel.

But that wasn’t the worst part.

Harold said Vanessa had already prepared evidence portraying Daniel as an abusive father.

👉 Vanessa had spent months secretly creating a second version of Daniel’s life—one designed to make a court believe Lily needed protection from him.
