Chapter 12 - The Fake Father
Investigators found the folder on Vanessa’s laptop.
Photos of Lily crying.
Pictures of bruises from ordinary childhood falls.
Screenshots of Daniel traveling.
Missed calls.
Late meetings.
A photograph of a broken glass after Daniel accidentally dropped it during an argument.
Each item was real.
The story around them was not.
Vanessa labeled everything.
“Anger.”
“Neglect.”
“Unstable behavior.”
“Child fearful.”
She had even written draft statements describing Daniel as increasingly unpredictable.
The irony was vicious.
While Vanessa secretly stole from Lily, drugged Daniel’s decanter, framed employees, and imprisoned Rachel—
she was building a file accusing Daniel of being dangerous.
Harold explained the intended sequence.
First remove Daniel from trust control.
If that failed, create a custody crisis.
Use Daniel’s temper against him.
Present Vanessa as Lily’s stable caregiver.
Discredit Rachel.
Then leverage the scandal to force a financial settlement.
Vanessa expected Daniel to pay almost anything to avoid losing Lily.
That was why she remained so calm during earlier arguments.
She wanted reactions.
Raised voices.
Broken objects.
Anything she could record selectively.
Daniel remembered several fights that seemed to begin over nothing.
Vanessa would push.
Insult.
Accuse.
Then suddenly become quiet while her phone sat faceup nearby.
She had been recording.
His attorney warned him that some recordings could still be uncomfortable.
Daniel did not care.
He released the full versions.
Context mattered.
In one recording, Vanessa repeatedly accused Daniel of not loving Lily.
Daniel became angry.
The edited clip ended there.
The full recording continued.
Daniel walked away from the argument, went upstairs, and read Lily a bedtime story.
Vanessa had cut that part.
Another clip showed Daniel shouting after discovering a household employee had been fired without his approval.
Vanessa labeled it violent instability.
The full audio revealed he was demanding the employee be rehired until the accusation could be investigated.
That employee was Maria.
Daniel had tried to challenge the story once.
Vanessa convinced him Maria admitted the theft privately.
He backed down.
He hated himself for that.
Maria did not blame him.
She blamed the person who created the lie.
That distinction helped Daniel begin separating responsibility from guilt.
Then prosecutors found Vanessa’s most carefully staged piece of evidence.
A video showing Lily crying inside her bedroom while Daniel’s voice shouted from the hallway.
