Chapter 10 - CLAIRE COMES HOME

Claire returned at 6:42 the next evening.
I saw her through the front window.
For thirteen months, I had imagined that moment a thousand ways.
I never imagined I would be afraid to open the door.
She stood on the porch wearing jeans, a gray coat, and the expression of someone approaching a grave.
Noah saw her first.
“Mom?”
Claire broke.
Noah ran.
I opened the door before he reached it.
Claire dropped to her knees.
He crashed into her.
She wrapped both arms around him and sobbed into his hair.
Lily stared from Rachel's arms.
She didn't know her mother.
That destroyed Claire more quietly.
She held out one trembling hand.
“Hi, baby.”
Lily buried her face against Rachel.
Claire closed her eyes.
I wanted to comfort her.
I wanted to scream at her.
Instead, I waited.
Later, after the children were settled and Claire had spoken with the appropriate professionals involved in the case, we sat in the living room.
The hanger was gone.
Preserved as evidence.
But I could still see it on the floor.
“Why didn't you call me sooner?”
Claire looked at her hands.
“I did.”
“One call after thirteen months.”
“No. Before I left.”
She had called me six times from an unrecognized number.
I had blocked it.
Vanessa told me it belonged to a debt collector connected to Claire's secret spending.
I believed her.
Claire sent letters.
None arrived.
She emailed.
Messages were filtered by a rule created inside my account.
Someone with access had intercepted almost every attempt.
Vanessa.
That didn't absolve Claire.
She knew where I worked.
She knew my family.
She could have found other ways.
Claire admitted it.
“I was scared. Then I was ashamed I'd stayed away so long. Every month made coming back harder.”
The same pattern again.
Fear.
Shame.
Silence.
Vanessa understood all three.
Then Claire explained why she finally returned.
Ethan's withdrawal contained a location code from a bank branch in Virginia.
Near a storage facility Claire had used during her investigation.
Inside that unit were original vendor contracts, Ethan's investor ledgers, and a backup drive.
If Ethan reached them first, he could destroy evidence.
Authorities already knew.
Claire didn't need to chase him.
Neither did I.
That mattered.
The old me would have driven there.
The man who slapped Vanessa would have wanted confrontation.
I stayed with my children.
Two days later, Ethan was located and detained on matters supported by the ongoing investigation.
The storage unit was secured through lawful process.
Inside was the backup drive.
And on that drive was something nobody expected.
A video of Vanessa meeting Ethan the day before Claire disappeared.
In it, Vanessa wasn't being threatened.

She was giving orders.
📖 Vanessa had portrayed herself as Ethan's frightened protector, but the storage video showed that when Claire vanished, Vanessa had been the one directing the next move. 👇
