Chapter 12 - MARK'S MONEY

Mark stared at the spreadsheet for a long time.

Then he said:

“The money wasn't mine.”

I almost walked out.

Rebecca stopped me with a look.

“Explain.”

Mark produced bank records.

The $175,000 entered an account in his name.

Then left forty-eight hours later.

Recipient:

Hawthorne Creative Holdings.

Claire's dormant company.

Claire leaned forward.

“I never received that.”

Mark nodded.

“I know.”

He had been instructed by Ethan to route funds through his personal account as part of what Ethan described as a temporary vendor correction.

Mark knew it was improper.

He did it anyway because Ethan already knew about Mark's earlier misuse of company money.

Then Ethan used the transfer to make it appear Mark was part of the larger fraud.

The $175,000 wasn't a payoff.

It was a trap.

But Mark still committed misconduct.

That distinction mattered.

Again.

Nobody got to become innocent simply because someone worse manipulated them.

Mark resigned as CFO before the board could force the issue.

He also agreed to cooperate with the internal and external investigations.

I lost my best friend as an executive that afternoon.

I wasn't sure whether I lost him personally.

Then Claire asked him:

“Who gave Vanessa Daniel's study combination?”

The room went silent.

I turned.

Mark's face changed.

“You?”

He nodded.

Months after Claire disappeared, Vanessa told him she needed documents for a company insurance review.

He gave her the combination because I'd once shared it with him during an emergency.

My private cabinet hadn't been private for almost a year.

Every secret seemed to trace back to somebody choosing convenience over honesty.

That night, Claire and I sat on opposite ends of the sofa.

The children were asleep.

“What happens to us?” she asked.

I had no answer.

Legally, the situation was complicated.

I had married Vanessa believing Claire had abandoned the marriage, while Claire was still alive and no lawful dissolution had occurred.

Rebecca had already referred us to appropriate family-law counsel.

Emotionally, it was worse.

Claire was my wife.

Vanessa was my wife in every way I had believed mattered.

And now neither relationship resembled what I thought it was.

Claire looked toward the hallway.

“Noah asked if I'm staying.”

“What did you say?”

“That I don't know.”

I nodded.

That was the right answer.

Then my phone rang.

Rachel.

She sounded breathless.

“Daniel, Noah woke up and told me something.”

“What?”

“He says Vanessa used to take Lily somewhere when you were at work.”

Claire went still.

“Where?”

“Noah doesn't know.”

But he remembered one thing.
