Chapter 25 - THE RINGS

Claire placed two rings on the kitchen table.
Mine.
Hers.
I had stopped wearing mine after marrying Vanessa.
Claire had kept hers hidden.
Now both sat between us.
“I talked to my attorney,” she said.
“So did I.”
Our legal situation had finally been untangled.
The marriage I entered with Vanessa while Claire remained alive involved facts and legal questions our attorneys handled through the proper process.
Those proceedings ended without giving Vanessa any claim over Claire's assets or the children's trusts.
But resolving Vanessa didn't answer us.
Claire and I were still legally connected.
Emotionally, we were strangers carrying familiar memories.
“What do you want?” I asked.
Claire looked toward the living room.
Noah was building something with blocks.
Lily kept knocking it down.
“I want to come home.”
My chest tightened.
Then she continued.
“But I don't want to pretend I never left.”
I nodded.
“I don't want to pretend I didn't build a life with Vanessa.”
Claire's eyes filled.
That truth hurt.
It needed to exist.
“I loved her,” I said.
Claire looked away.
“I know.”
“I hate what she did. But if I lie and say every moment was fake, then I'm doing what she did. Rewriting reality because it's easier.”
Claire looked back at me.
“Thank you.”
“For hurting you?”
“For not lying.”
Then she admitted something equally difficult.
Part of her had felt relieved during the first weeks away.
Not because she wanted to leave us.
Because she had spent months terrified and investigating fraud while caring for a newborn.
For a short time, hiding felt like escape.
Then shame trapped her.
I didn't like hearing it.
I needed to.
We finally understood that rebuilding meant allowing truths that weren't flattering.
Claire picked up her ring.
“I don't want to put this on today.”
“Neither do I.”
She smiled through tears.
“Good.”
We put the rings in a small wooden box.
Not thrown away.
Not worn.
A choice postponed honestly instead of avoided through deception.
Then my attorney called with another payoff.
The last disputed ownership claim involving the Hawthorne account had been resolved.
Claire's assets were restored to her control.
The children's trusts were secure.
Carter Biomedical's recovered funds and insurance claims stabilized the company's losses.
The financial machinery Vanessa and Ethan built had been dismantled.
There was no hidden account left to discover.
No mystery investor.
No secret mastermind.
Just consequences.
That evening, Vanessa's attorney delivered one final item with permission.
The sealed letter for Noah.
His therapist still recommended waiting.
I locked it away.
Not in my study.
In a neutral file held for him.
He could decide when he was older.
For once, a secret wasn't being hidden to control someone.

It was being held until the person it belonged to was ready.
📖 With the money, evidence, and legal battles finally settling, the last confrontation would not be with Vanessa or Ethan—it would be with the life Claire and I wanted after them. 👇
