Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING

Claire was crying on the recording.
I nearly stopped listening.
Rebecca sat beside me.
Vanessa and her attorney sat across the table.
The audio had been recorded thirteen months earlier.
Claire's voice:
“I need to go home.”
Vanessa answered:
“You can't.”
“My children need me.”
“If Ethan knows you're alive, he'll use Lily.”
“I'll tell Daniel.”
“No.”
“Why?”
A pause.
Then Vanessa said:
“Because Daniel will go after him.”
She knew me.
That was the worst part.
She knew exactly what I would have done.
Claire asked, “How long?”
Vanessa answered, “Give me two weeks.”
Two weeks became thirteen months.
The recording continued.
Claire gave Vanessa access to a secure evidence folder so Vanessa could supposedly copy Ethan's financial records into it.
Instead, Vanessa deleted material connecting herself to the fraud.
Forensic recovery later confirmed portions of that.
Vanessa admitted it in the room.
“I was trying to protect myself.”
“You were protecting Ethan.”
“Both.”
“And you married me.”
She looked down.
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
I laughed once.
No humor.
“What was supposed to happen?”
“Claire was supposed to come back.”
“When?”
Vanessa couldn't answer.
That was answer enough.
The longer Claire stayed gone, the more useful her absence became.
Vanessa gained my trust.
Access to my house.
Access to company conversations.
A relationship with my children.
Then eventually a marriage.
She claimed she genuinely fell in love with me.
I didn't care.
Love didn't erase what she'd done.
Then Rebecca asked about the papers.
Vanessa explained.
She had removed the Claire folder because Ethan told her investigators were closing in on the Hawthorne transactions.
She planned to destroy documents connecting him to the false death certificate.
“Why were the papers on the floor?”
“Lily came into the study.”
My hands curled.
Vanessa had been searching the cabinet when Lily wandered in.
Lily grabbed pages.
Vanessa panicked.
Noah saw her.
He asked what she was doing.
She struck him.
Then Lily started crying.
The violence I walked into hadn't begun with a random tantrum.
It began because my children caught Vanessa destroying evidence.
That was the second major payoff.
The hanger wasn't separate from the mystery.
It was the moment the cover-up collided with two children who didn't understand what they were seeing.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who did you call when I came home?”
She swallowed.
“Ethan.”
“Why?”
“To warn him.”
“Where is he?”
“I don't know.”
Her phone records would later confirm the call.
Then Rebecca's phone buzzed.
She read the message.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She turned the screen toward me.
Ethan had just withdrawn $480,000 from an account connected to the fraudulent fund.

And disappeared.
📖 Ethan was finally running, but the destination hidden inside his last transaction would force Claire to choose between remaining safe and coming home. 👇
