Chapter 15 - REBECCA

Rebecca didn't flinch when I put the photograph in front of her.

“I wondered when you'd find this.”

My stomach dropped.

Claire stood beside me.

“You knew them?”

Rebecca nodded.

“Professionally.”

Ten years earlier, before becoming my attorney, Rebecca worked at a firm representing Miriam Cole during an appeal related to her fraud conviction.

Vanessa and Ethan attended meetings.

The photograph had been taken outside the courthouse.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because until this moment, I didn't know Vanessa Carter was Vanessa Cole.”

Vanessa had used her father's surname professionally.

Rebecca knew her as Vanessa Cole.

The photograph was old.

Rebecca's explanation could be checked.

We checked it.

Employment records, case files, dates.

It held.

That should have relieved me.

Instead, I felt exhausted by suspicion.

Every photograph became betrayal.

Every old connection became conspiracy.

Claire saw it.

“You thought she was part of it.”

“Yes.”

“So did I.”

That mattered.

We were both learning the same lesson.

Evidence had to change beliefs.

Not simply feed them.

Rebecca voluntarily brought in another attorney to review any potential conflict.

There wasn't one requiring her withdrawal, but she stepped back from certain matters involving Miriam's old case anyway.

Transparency.

The opposite of everything Vanessa had done.

Then Miriam became unexpectedly important.

Her care facility had preserved visitor logs.

Vanessa visited monthly.

Ethan visited twice.

On his last visit, he left a locked document case in Miriam's storage closet.

With appropriate legal process, investigators recovered it.

Inside were original investor statements from Ethan's failed fund.

Those records proved the fraud began before Carter Biomedical was targeted.

That destroyed Ethan's claim that Vanessa had created everything.

He had started the fire.

Vanessa chose to feed it.

Another major payoff.

Then came the relationship consequence.

Claire told me she wanted her own apartment.

“You just came home.”

“I came back to my children.”

“And me?”

She looked at me for a long time.

“I love you.”

My chest tightened.

“But?”

“You married someone else.”

“I thought you'd left.”

“I know.”

Neither fact erased the other.

Claire had lived thirteen months in fear and secrecy.

I had lived thirteen months believing she abandoned us.

Vanessa had occupied the space between those realities.

We couldn't pretend it wasn't there.

“I need to learn who I am outside hiding,” Claire said.

I nodded.

“And I need to learn who I am when I'm not trying to solve this.”

For once, neither of us forced an answer.

Then Noah appeared in the doorway.

“Are you getting divorced?”

Claire's face broke.

I crouched.

“We don't know yet.”

He nodded slowly.

Then asked the question that mattered more.

“Is Mom disappearing again?”

Claire dropped to her knees.

“No.”

That promise was the first thing in months I desperately wanted to believe.

📖 Claire and I could no longer pretend surviving the conspiracy automatically repaired our marriage, while Vanessa prepared a counterattack aimed directly at my worst mistake. 👇
