Chapter 7 - THE THREAT
The threat was inside Lily's hospital record.
Claire had received it four days before disappearing.
A photograph of newborn Lily sleeping in her hospital bassinet.
Someone had drawn a red circle around her face.
Underneath:
KEEP DIGGING AND SHE GETS A DIFFERENT CHART NEXT TIME.
I felt physically sick.
Lily had been born three weeks earlier.
The photograph wasn't taken by Claire.
It wasn't taken by me.
Hospital metadata showed it originated from an internal clinical device.
Someone with hospital access had obtained it.
Vanessa wasn't a hospital employee.
Neither was Ethan.
But Vanessa's first husband had been.
Dr. Michael Grant.
A pediatric anesthesiologist.
I knew almost nothing about him.
Vanessa told me Michael died six years earlier.
By then, I no longer accepted any death story she gave me.
Rebecca checked.
Michael Grant was alive.
He practiced medicine in Oregon.
And he had filed for a protective order against Vanessa seven years earlier.
The case had later been dismissed when he moved away.
We contacted his attorney.
Michael agreed to speak.
His first question was:
“Are the children safe?”
“Yes.”
“Keep them that way.”
I hated hearing another man say it.
Michael told us Vanessa had used his hospital credentials during their marriage.
At first, for harmless things.
Then to access information she had no right to see.
When he confronted her, she blamed Ethan.
Michael eventually discovered Vanessa and Ethan were selling confidential demographic information to outside marketers through an intermediary.
He reported it.
The scheme collapsed.
Their marriage ended.
“What does that have to do with Lily?”
“I don't know.”
“Did you access her chart?”
“No.”
“Could Vanessa still use your credentials?”
“Not mine.”
Then he gave us a name.
Dr. Susan Bell.
Vanessa's cousin.
Susan worked at the hospital where Lily was born.
Rebecca checked the access logs.
Susan had opened Lily's chart eleven times without documented clinical reason.
That was real.
The hospital launched an internal review.
The photograph threat suddenly had a plausible source.
But Susan denied sending it.
She admitted accessing the chart.
Why?
Vanessa asked her to check whether Lily had inherited a congenital condition Claire's family carried.
Improper.
But potentially less sinister than the threat.
Then investigators examined Susan's account access.
One login occurred while Susan was verifiably in surgery.
Someone else had used her credentials.
Security footage showed who entered the staff terminal.
Ethan.
He had worn borrowed scrubs.
The threat to Lily had come from Vanessa's brother.
For the first time, we had direct evidence connecting Ethan to the intimidation that drove Claire into hiding.
Then Michael said something I hadn't expected.
“Daniel, Ethan doesn't scare Vanessa.”
“What does?”
“Losing control of Ethan.”
Vanessa wasn't simply working with her brother.
