Chapter 8 - THE BROTHER

Ethan owed $3.7 million.
Not to a criminal syndicate.
Not to some mysterious stranger.
To investors.
He had run a fraudulent real-estate fund, covering losses with new money and fabricated returns.
Vanessa discovered it before regulators did.
Instead of reporting him, she tried to save him.
That was the beginning.
She used her access to wealthy families.
Ethan created vendors.
Money moved.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger.
Carter Biomedical became attractive because our vendor budget was enormous.
Claire's dormant business account became useful because her name already appeared in our corporate ecosystem.
Vanessa wasn't stealing millions for luxury.
She was trying to fill a hole Ethan had created.
That didn't make her sympathetic.
It made her motive concrete.
Then Claire found the Hawthorne transactions.
Everything escalated.
Erin Walsh died accidentally.
Ethan saw opportunity.
Erin resembled Claire enough to create confusion.
He supplied Claire's documents to the hospital and impersonated me.
The false death record gave Ethan a tool.
He used it to pressure Mark.
He attempted the insurance claim.
He also believed Claire's legal death could complicate any testimony she later gave about the fraud.
But Claire was still alive.
So why disappear?
Because Ethan sent the photograph of Lily.
Claire panicked.
Instead of coming to me, she contacted a private investigator.
That investigator helped her leave temporarily while evidence was gathered.
Temporarily became thirteen months.
Why?
Because Claire made a catastrophic mistake.
She trusted Vanessa.
Even after suspecting her.
Claire believed Ethan was forcing Vanessa to help him.
Vanessa convinced Claire she could feed information from inside.
Then she repeatedly told Claire it wasn't safe to return.
Vanessa kept my wife away while moving closer to me.
The betrayal was almost elegant.
Vanessa comforted Noah.
Held Lily.
Brought food.
Sat beside me when I couldn't sleep.
Eventually, she told me Claire had probably chosen another life.
I hated myself for believing it.
Rebecca stopped that spiral.
“You were manipulated with information you couldn't independently verify.”
I nodded.
But there was still something I owned.
I had stopped looking.
Not immediately.
Not easily.
But eventually.
Then Rachel called.
She had been caring for the children while I met Rebecca.
“Daniel, Vanessa is outside.”
I stood.
“What?”
“She isn't trying to enter. She says she wants to talk.”
“Don't let her near the kids.”
“I won't.”
By the time I reached home, Vanessa was sitting in her car.
Police were already aware because of the child-protection situation.
She stepped out only after her attorney arrived.
Her first words weren't an apology.
“Ethan is going to kill me.”
I stared at her.
“Then tell the police.”
“I will.”
She held out a flash drive.
“This proves what happened to Claire.”
For the first time, Vanessa wasn't controlling the room.

She was afraid of the monster she'd spent years protecting.
📖 Vanessa finally offered evidence against Ethan, but the recording on that drive would prove she had betrayed Claire long before she ever became my wife. 👇
