Chapter 5 - CLAIRE'S SECRET

The second message wasn't addressed to Noah.

It was a draft.

Claire never sent it.

Daniel,

I found what Vanessa and Ethan have been doing. I should have told you sooner, but I was scared you'd confront them before I could prove it. If anything happens, check the Hawthorne account.

That was all.

No explanation.

No attachment.

Rebecca searched our known financial records.

No Hawthorne account.

Rachel remembered something.

Claire's maiden name was Hawthorne.

We checked dormant accounts connected to her old design business.

One appeared.

Hawthorne Creative Holdings.

Claire had opened it six years earlier.

The account itself was legitimate.

The recent transactions weren't.

Over eighteen months, nearly $640,000 had moved through it.

Money entered from three companies I didn't recognize.

Then left within days.

Claire had discovered the activity three weeks before she disappeared.

Bank records showed she requested statements in person.

The following day, Vanessa visited her.

I knew because our old doorbell archive still contained the clip.

Vanessa entered smiling.

She left forty-three minutes later without smiling at all.

Claire never told me.

That hurt.

Then I forced myself to ask why.

Maybe she was afraid I'd react exactly as I had in the living room.

Fast.

Angry.

Before understanding.

Rebecca identified the incoming companies.

Two were legitimate vendors.

The third was controlled by Ethan.

Payments had been disguised as consulting fees tied to Carter Biomedical.

My company had paid money into entities that eventually reached Claire's dormant account.

Someone was using her identity in a financial diversion scheme.

If discovered, Claire could be blamed.

Then came the first major payoff.

Claire hadn't vanished because she wanted to leave us.

She had discovered fraud being committed partly in her name.

Vanessa knew she discovered it.

And within weeks, Claire disappeared.

I sat in Rebecca's office gripping the edge of the table.

“Where has she been for thirteen months?”

“We don't know.”

“But she called me.”

“Yes.”

“Why won't she come home?”

Rebecca didn't answer.

My phone buzzed.

A photograph arrived from an unknown number.

Claire.

Alive.

Holding that day's newspaper.

Behind her was a motel room.

Underneath:

I can't come back until you know who inside your company helped Vanessa.

I stared at the sentence.

Ethan wasn't the only person.

Someone at Carter Biomedical had authorized those vendor payments.

Someone I saw every working day.

Then another message appeared.

Don't trust your CFO.

My CFO was Mark Ellis.

My best friend of twenty-two years.

📖 Claire had finally given me a target inside my company, but confronting Mark would show me why she had spent thirteen months hiding from everyone—including me. 👇
