Chapter 17 - ONE WEEK BEFORE THE WEDDING

“You let me marry her.”
Claire didn't defend herself.
We were in her temporary apartment.
No children.
No lawyers.
Just us.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Vanessa told me Ethan was watching the wedding.”
“So?”
“She said if I appeared, he'd take Lily.”
“You believed her?”
“I had already seen what he could access.”
I paced toward the window.
“You could have called police.”
“I didn't trust anyone.”
“You could have called me.”
“I didn't trust what you'd do.”
That stopped me.
Claire stood.
“I thought you'd confront Ethan. I thought you'd get hurt. I thought he'd hurt the kids.”
“So you decided for me.”
“Yes.”
Her voice broke.
“And I was wrong.”
That mattered.
No excuse.
No manipulation.
Wrong.
But honesty didn't make the pain disappear.
I had stood at an altar with Vanessa while Claire was alive less than two hundred miles away.
Claire knew.
Vanessa knew.
I didn't.
“I don't know how to forgive that.”
Claire nodded.
“Then don't promise you will.”
I looked at her.
She had changed.
So had I.
Maybe love survived.
Maybe marriage didn't.
Those were different questions.
Then Claire told me what happened during Vanessa's second visit.
Vanessa brought photographs of Noah at school.
Lily with Rachel.
Me leaving work.
She told Claire Ethan had people everywhere.
Later evidence suggested most of those photographs had been taken by Vanessa herself.
The surveillance network was largely theater.
Claire had been imprisoned by fear more than by physical force.
Vanessa understood psychology.
Show enough proof to make every unseen threat believable.
Then Claire gave me something she had hidden even after returning.
A voice recorder.
She recorded the second meeting.
Vanessa said:
“Daniel is moving on.”
Claire answered:
“Then let him.”
Vanessa asked:
“You mean that?”
A long silence.
Then Claire said:
“If staying away keeps my children alive, yes.”
I sat down.
The recording didn't erase her choice.
But it let me hear the fear inside it.
Then Vanessa's voice:
“Good. Because after the wedding, everything gets easier.”
Claire asked:
“What gets easier?”
Vanessa didn't answer.
That sentence became important.
What changed after marriage?
Access.
Spousal privileges.
Household finances.
My study.
My company events.
My children's routines.
Vanessa didn't marry me only because she wanted me.
Marriage completed her access.
Then Rebecca called.
Ethan had begun negotiating.
And his first proffer directly contradicted Vanessa.
He claimed the entire threat campaign against Claire had been Vanessa's idea.
