Chapter 20 - THE SCHOOL FORM
Vanessa hadn't gone to Noah's school.
Security footage proved it.
The woman who arrived wore sunglasses and presented an authorization form.
Staff refused because the identification didn't match school records.
She left.
Her face was captured outside.
Claire recognized her.
Miriam Cole's former caregiver.
Janice Reed.
Vanessa's mother's caregiver had tried to collect my son.
My first instinct was obvious.
Vanessa sent her.
Evidence said otherwise.
Janice had been fired from Miriam's facility two months earlier.
Bank records showed a payment to her that morning.

Ethan.
He had arranged it before being detained through a scheduled transfer and prewritten instructions.
A contingency.
If he lost control, create another incident around Vanessa.
Why?
To make Vanessa look like she violated restrictions and destroy her credibility before she could cooperate against him.
For once, Vanessa was being framed.
I hated defending that fact.
I did anyway.
Because truth didn't belong only to people I liked.
Rebecca communicated the evidence through proper channels.
The school strengthened pickup safeguards.
Noah wasn't physically harmed.
But he heard enough to understand someone had tried to take him.
That night, he crawled into my bed.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Are bad people always bad?”
I stared into the dark.
“No.”
“Is Vanessa bad?”
I thought carefully.
“Vanessa did bad things. Serious things.”
“But she used to make pancakes.”
My throat tightened.
“Yes.”
“She hugged me.”
“I know.”
“Was that fake?”
I didn't know.
“Maybe not all of it.”
Children wanted clean categories.
So did adults.
Vanessa had loved parts of our life and still abused the children.
She had paid for her mother's care and still committed fraud.
She had feared Ethan and still helped him.
Contradiction wasn't innocence.
It was humanity without excuse.
The next morning, Vanessa voluntarily provided investigators with every remaining password she knew.
One opened an encrypted account Ethan used.
Inside were scheduled instructions, including the school pickup plan.
That cooperation prevented another planned act.
Ethan had prepared to leak fabricated documents claiming Claire stole from Carter Biomedical.
Those files were identified before release.
For the first time, Vanessa's decision helped protect Claire rather than isolate her.
Claire didn't forgive her.
Neither did I.
But we acknowledged what she had done.
Then Vanessa asked through counsel for one thing.
She wanted to write Noah an apology.
No direct contact.
No request for forgiveness.
Just a letter held by a therapist until professionals decided whether Noah should ever receive it.
I agreed to let the professionals decide.
Because Noah's healing mattered more than my desire to punish her.
Then the board called.
Carter Biomedical had discovered losses far larger than we knew.
