Chapter 2 - The Salute That Made Everyone Silent

Nobody knew what to do.

That was the strangest part.

My family was always prepared.

Prepared with insults.

Prepared with excuses.

Prepared with reasons why I was never enough.

But they weren’t prepared for respect.

Especially not from someone wearing that uniform.

The commander remained standing in front of me.

Saluting.

A gesture meant for someone else.

Someone they never believed I could be.

My father stared at him.

Then at me.

“What is this?”

His voice sounded different now.

Less certain.

The commander didn’t answer.

He kept his eyes on me.

Waiting.

Not demanding.

Waiting.

That was something my family never did.

They always decided for me.

My mother stepped forward.

“Commander, there must be some misunderstanding.”

The commander slowly lowered his hand.

“No.”

One word.

Calm.

Absolute.

“There is not.”

Jason looked uncomfortable.

He had spent the ceremony enjoying his position.

The hero.

The successful son.

The one everyone praised.

Now attention was moving away from him.

Toward me.

The commander glanced at Jason’s uniform.

Then back at Olivia.

The comparison was obvious.

Jason had the medals.

But the commander looked at me like he knew what those medals cost.

My father laughed nervously.

“She’s not military.”

The commander looked at him.

That was all.

No anger.

No argument.

Just a look.

And my father stopped talking.

Because some people carry authority without raising their voice.

The security officer stood nearby.

Confused.

He had been ready to remove me.

Now he didn’t know where he belonged.

The commander looked down at the leather folder.

“Is this still sealed?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“By your choice?”

“Yes.”

A silence followed.

My mother’s face changed.

Because she understood something.

The folder wasn’t evidence against me.

It was something I had been protecting.

Jason noticed too.

His confidence weakened.

“What is going on?”

Nobody answered.

Because the truth wasn’t ready to come out.
