Chapter 5 - The Stranger Who Knew My Secret

I didn’t show anyone the message.

Not immediately.

Trust was something I learned to measure carefully.

The commander noticed anyway.

He always noticed.

“Problem?”

I locked my phone.

“Maybe.”

He nodded.

That was all.

No pressure.

No demand.

Another thing my family never understood.

Respect.

My father approached again.

But his confidence was gone.

“Olivia.”

I almost didn’t recognize the tone.

It wasn’t anger.

It was uncertainty.

“What?”

He looked at the commander.

Then at me.

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

I stared at him.

“Would you have listened?”

Silence.

Because we both knew the answer.

My mother stepped closer.

“We were trying to protect you.”

I looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“You were protecting yourselves.”

The words hurt her.

Good.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because some truths need to be uncomfortable.

Then Jason finally spoke.

“I don’t understand.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

Because that was the problem.

He never tried.

The commander received another message.

This time, he looked concerned.

He turned the phone toward me.

A photo.

Taken moments earlier.

Me.

Standing on the graduation field.
