Chapter 4 - The Message That Was Never Supposed To Arrive

The commander stepped away from the group.

The military families around us pretended not to watch.

But everyone was watching.

People notice when power shifts.

My father whispered:

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

That question told me everything.

Not:

“What happened?”

Not:

“Are you okay?”

What did you do?

As if my existence was the problem.

I ignored him.

The commander returned.

“There has been movement.”

Jason looked confused.

“Movement?”

The commander didn’t answer him.

Because Jason wasn’t involved.

Not really.

That bothered him.

For the first time, Jason wasn’t the most important person in the room.

I looked at the graduation field.

Rows of sailors.

Flags.

Families.

A normal ceremony.

A moment that should have belonged to Jason.

Instead, it became the place where my past returned.

The commander lowered his voice.

“Do you want to leave?”

I thought about it.

The old me would have.

The old me would have disappeared.

Apologized.

Protected everyone else.

But I looked at my family.

My father.

My mother.

Jason.

And realized something.

Leaving was exactly what they expected.

“No.”

The commander nodded.

“Good.”

Then my phone vibrated.

A message.

Unknown sender.

One sentence.

“Your family finally sees what they lost.”

I stared at the screen.

Because the sender knew something.

May you like

Something nobody should know.
