Chapter 6 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph was recent.

Too recent.

Someone had been watching.

The commander immediately moved his attention to security.

The ceremony continued around us, but our small circle had become something else.

An investigation.

My father looked nervous.

Jason looked confused.

My mother looked afraid.

That was the first time I saw fear on her face.

Not embarrassment.

Not concern about appearances.

Fear.

I turned toward her.

“You know something.”

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Jason looked at her.

“Mom?”

She looked away.

A small movement.

But it changed everything.

Because Jason finally realized he wasn’t the only person kept in the dark.

The commander looked at me.

“There are things your family does not know.”

I nodded.

“And things they do.”

He didn’t confirm.

He didn’t deny.

Then the security officer returned.

“Commander.”

He looked uncomfortable.

“Yes?”

“There is someone requesting access to the ceremony.”

The commander’s expression hardened.

“Who?”

The officer hesitated.

Then said a name.

A name I hadn’t heard in years.
