The visitor knew.
That was clear.
They knew the folder.
They knew me.
They knew why I left.
But they didn’t know everything.
Nobody did.
That was intentional.
The commander asked everyone to step back.
My family objected.
Naturally.
They were used to being included.
But this was different.
Some truths weren’t family property.
The visitor looked at Jason.
“You really married into this family without knowing?”
Jason frowned.
“Knowing what?”
They looked at me.
“She sacrificed everything to protect people who never protected her.”
My mother lowered her eyes.
My father looked away.
Jason finally understood.
The story he believed was incomplete.
Very incomplete.
The visitor pointed toward the folder.
“Open it.”
I didn’t move.
Because once opened…
There was no returning to the life I created.
The commander waited.
Then quietly said:
“It’s your choice.”
The same words.
The same respect.
My choice.
