Chapter 7 - The Person From My Past

The name felt impossible.
A person I thought belonged to another life.
Another version of myself.
The commander looked at me.
“You know this person.”
It wasn’t a question.
“Yes.”
My voice was quiet.
Jason watched me.
For once, he looked less arrogant.
More human.
“Who are they?”
I didn’t answer.
Because explaining required opening doors I had kept locked for years.
The commander walked toward the entrance.
Security followed.
My family stayed behind.
Waiting.
Watching.
My father whispered:
“You always made things complicated.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
A pause.
“You just never wanted the simple truth.”
Then the visitor arrived.
Everyone recognized the seriousness immediately.
The commander greeted them.
Not casually.
Professionally.
That alone was enough.
The person looked directly at me.
Not my father.
Not Jason.
Me.
“You look exactly the same.”
I said nothing.
Then they looked at the folder beneath my arm.
And smiled.
“You kept it.”
My family heard.
May you like
And suddenly everyone wanted answers.
